Choosing a Banner for the Site It Has to Survive

A banner is a printed sheet designed to be held under tension, and most banner failures come down to choosing the wrong material or finish for the installation environment, rather than the print itself.

Three key questions determine the right specification: How exposed is the location? Will the banner be viewed from one side or both? And how long does it need to remain in place? Once those requirements are clear, the appropriate weight, hems, eyelets and pole pockets can be selected to suit.

Where this gets used

An exposed fence line, boundary or scaffold

For exposed locations, the key choice is mesh or solid PVC banner material. Mesh is perforated to allow wind to pass through, reducing the load on fixings, eyelets and the supporting fence or structure. Solid PVC produces denser, stronger colour and a more solid appearance, but on long, unsheltered spans it can act like a sail and place greater stress on the fixings.

The decision to use mesh should be based on the span and level of exposure, rather than a single fixed measurement. For long, high or fully exposed installations, mesh is generally the safer specification. A shopfront or roadside banner that has to read from a distance

For banners viewed from roads or at a distance, the main consideration is legibility rather than durability. Instead of choosing the banner size based on budget, start with the viewing distance. Determine how far away a driver or pedestrian will first see the banner, then size the headline accordingly. A common rule of thumb is around 25 mm of capital letter height for every 3 metres of viewing distance.

Build the banner around the headline rather than trying to fit too much information into the available space. Three clear, well-sized words will outperform a paragraph that cannot be read at 40 km/h.

If the banner needs to be readable from both sides of traffic, a blockout banner material may be more suitable than simply choosing a heavier standard banner.

A double-sided banner or a hanging drop

For interior graphics, the main options are cut vinyl lettering, printed wall decals, and full-wall mural media. Cut lettering works well for values statements, wayfinding and reception branding, allowing the existing wall colour to remain visible. Printed decals are ideal for shaped graphics and logos applied to painted plasterboard.

A wall mural covers the entire wall and is produced in panels that either overlap or butt-join, so the artwork should be prepared to the exact finished wall dimensions before production.

One important consideration is freshly painted walls. The paint must be fully cured before applying adhesive graphics to ensure proper adhesion and prevent the graphic from failing.

A construction hoarding or a site boundary

Hoarding is where banners stop being a single sheet and become a wrapped surface. There are two ways to do it: tensioned banner panels fixed to the hoarding frame, or an adhesive wrap applied directly onto the hoarding sheet for a seamless finish. Panels are cheaper, come down cleanly and can be swapped as stages change; a wrap looks considerably better and photographs better, which matters on a residential development being marketed off the plan. Either way the artwork has to be built to the surveyed hoarding dimensions and split into panels before printing, and any hoarding-scale artwork needs the panel joins planned around door openings and posts.

Materials and finish

PVC weight, and when to pay for more of it

Banner PVC is specified by weight, with heavier stock generally offering greater stiffness, strength around the eyelets and resistance to fatigue in windy conditions. Standard-weight banner material is suitable for most applications, including shopfronts, events, fences and general promotional signage.

Heavier stock can be worthwhile for long-term installations, larger unsupported spans and banners that will be repeatedly installed and removed. However, weight cannot compensate for poor finishing—a heavy banner with unhemmed edges can still tear or fray.

For the best result, prioritise proper hemming and quality eyelets first, then consider upgrading the banner weight. Confirm the specific stock weights available for your application before ordering.

Mesh, blockout and backlit stock

These three options are not upgrades to standard PVC; they are different materials designed to solve specific applications. Mesh sacrifices a small amount of colour density in exchange for improved wind permeability, making it ideal for exposed or windy locations. Blockout features an opaque layer that prevents show-through or “ghosting” on double-sided prints, making it the preferred choice for hanging and pole banners. Backlit materials are specifically engineered for illumination from behind, evenly diffusing light and allowing the artwork to be printed for optimal light transmission. As a result, a standard banner used in a lightbox can appear patchy and washed out by comparison. Backlit applications are also available as PET film or self-adhesive vinyl rather than a traditional hanging banner, depending on whether the material is being framed, slotted into a display, or bonded to an acrylic panel.

Hemming, eyelets and pole pockets

Finishing often has a greater impact on banner lifespan than the material itself. A welded hem folds and reinforces the edge, giving wind less opportunity to catch or tear the material, while eyelets distribute the load evenly along the reinforced edge. Skipping eyelets and securing the banner only at the corners concentrates wind pressure on four points, making this one of the most common causes of banner damage.

Pole pockets are used instead of eyelets when a banner needs to slide onto a frame or drop pole, while a rope-in-hem provides additional strength for banners that will be installed under significant tension. Always design artwork to the finished banner size and keep important text and graphics well clear of the edges, as the hem folds material back and an eyelet placed through a logo cannot be moved. Should I use mesh or solid PVC?

Use mesh when a banner is fully exposed, spans a long unsheltered area, or is being installed on construction fencing, scaffolding or an open boundary. Its perforated structure allows wind to pass through rather than placing the full load on the eyelets, helping the banner stay secure in strong weather.

Choose solid PVC for sheltered locations, shorter spans or situations where colour density and close-up detail matter. Solid PVC produces richer, more vibrant prints and generally offers better readability at close range.

There is no single span length where mesh automatically becomes the better choice—the right option depends on the site, mounting method and level of wind exposure. For larger or exposed installations, it is worth discussing the conditions before ordering.

How big should the banner be, and how much text fits on it?

Size the banner for the reading distance, not simply the available space. Start by determining where the viewer will first see the banner, then size the headline accordingly. As a practical rule of thumb, allow around 25 mm of capital letter height for every 3 metres of viewing distance. Build the rest of the design around the headline, with plenty of clear space.

Keep all text and logos well away from the edges so the hem and eyelets do not interfere with important artwork. Avoid the temptation to fill every available area. If you need to communicate detailed information as well as a strong headline, it is often more effective to use two banners designed for different viewing distances rather than crowding everything onto one.

How should banner artwork be supplied?

Supply a print-ready PDF at the finished banner size, or at a clean scaled proportion with the scale clearly stated. Include bleed on all four edges, and ensure fonts are either embedded or converted to outlines.

Work in CMYK wherever possible. Bright RGB blues and oranges can shift significantly when printed, so it is better to see the colour difference in the artwork file before production rather than on the finished banner.

Large-format banners do not require the extremely high resolution often assumed. Because viewing distance increases with banner size, a sensible resolution at final size is usually sufficient while keeping the file manageable.

For double-sided banners, supply two clearly named files, with the reverse artwork oriented and laid out according to how it will actually be viewed.

How long will a banner last outdoors on the Gold Coast?

Banner life is generally shorter in hot, high-UV conditions than in cooler, lower-UV climates, and the installation position can matter as much as the material itself. Constant northern sun, coastal salt air and summer storm exposure can all reduce service life, while sheltered or south-facing positions can extend it considerably.

In practice, many banners are replaced because of mechanical damage rather than print fade—torn eyelets, frayed edges or splits caused by excessive tension and seasonal expansion. For banners expected to remain installed long term, a UV laminate is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend their working life. Specific service-life expectations should always be confirmed for the chosen material and installation conditions.

Do you hang the banner or wrap the hoarding?

That means measurements are your responsibility. Measure the fence, wall, frame or hoarding before the artwork is created, as a banner made 100 mm too wide cannot simply be adjusted later.

Installation is straightforward for any builder, signwriter or applicator. Secure the banner through every eyelet, rather than just the corners, using cable ties or bungees that allow some movement under gust loads. Keep the banner taut, but avoid stretching it excessively.
